Thank you for continuing to take an interest in Auckland Regional Landfill. We really appreciate your concern for Wayby Valley, the wider environment and the community. As always, our team is available to answer any questions you may have. Just reply to this email or call 0800 927 837.
Our resource consent application as associated evidence, at (approximately) 3,000 pages of technical documents, is complex and we understand it’s not possible for everyone to read it in full and take it all in. We also know it was not possible for many to attend the Council hearing.
A visit to Redvale Landfill & Energy Park in Dairy Flat, which has similar technology to what is proposed at ARL, is a great way to better understand the proposal. We welcome any interested parties to visit Redvale and see for themselves how a modern, engineered landfill looks and works. If you are interested in taking us up on this offer, please email arl@wastemanagement.co.nz
All appeals against the resource consent decision have now been lodged with the Environment Court.
Appeals have been received from:
The New Zealand Refining Company requested a minor wording change to one of the conditions of consent. This has been agreed to by Waste Management and Auckland Council, and the Environment Court has been advised.
In addition, the following parties have registered interest in some of the appeals. This means they can join the relevant appellant in making their case at the Environment Court:
We are continuing to seek meetings with appellants, and interested parties noted above, to see how we can address outstanding concerns.
We’ve already taken on board feedback, including the cultural values assessments of mana whenua, as well as feedback at the Council hearing, and made improvements to our original proposal based on this. This includes:
Onsite
Existing Native Vegetation and wetland
New native forest, wetland and riparian
Existing exotic forest
Offsite
DoC land
3rd party land
The independent commissioners have yet to reach their decision on Waste Management’s Private Plan Change application. This would create a precinct in the Auckland Unitary Plan for a landfill.
As it makes sense to mediate on any potential appeals to the Private Plan Change at the same time as the resource consent appeals, the Environment Court will, in late August 2021, review if this is possible. This is dependent on how far away the Private Plan Change decision is.
Redvale Landfill & Energy Park is due to close in 2028, and it will take an estimated five years to do the necessary works before Auckland Regional Landfill can start to receive waste. With this in mind, Waste Management has sought direction from the Environment Court to progress with resource consent mediation and expert conferencing in September, with the aim of securing a hearing date in June/ July 2022.
