Supporting NZ to recover, recycle and reuse plastic

To improve on New Zealand’s ability to recycle plastic locally, Christchurch-based recycling specialist Comspec has been purchased by Plastics Recycling NZ.

Plastics Recycling NZ is a joint venture (JV) between Waste Management NZ and Aliaxis NZ (owners of the Marley brand). The JV was formed in 2022 to invest into plastic recycling solutions for the building and construction industry.

Waste Management Circular Services General Manager David Howie says Comspec is a natural fit for the joint venture, and it means there will be better recovery, recycling and reuse of plastics in the South Island.

Comspec processes plastics 2 (HDPE), 4 (LDPE) & 5 (PP or polypropylene) into pellets. The pellets are then sent to plastic manufacturers around the country to create a range of products.

“We are focused on improving plastic collection and informing customers that many products they throw away can be recycled. Having Comspec onboard means we have a great, local solution for the South Island,” David says.

Plastic Recycling NZ takes over ownership of Comspec on 1 June, with Waste Management to run operations.

22 Comspec employees will move across to Plastics Recycling NZ and will work closely with Waste Management’s Christchurch head office.

“Watch this space. There is more plastic recycling and circular economy innovation to come,” David Howie says.
