The incredible engineering feat involved in building a new cell at Kate Valley Landfill has been showcased in the media.
Stuff has run a series of photographs and a detailed explanation of what the construction has involved.
The lined area which contains the waste at a landfill is called a cell, and new cells are regularly constructed to safely contain the community’s waste. The team at Kate Valley aims to always have capacity to receive 12 – 18 months’ worth of waste at any one time.
Construction of the latest cell has taken 18 months to complete and has involved a team of 12 staff.
As the impressive photos show, an 82-metre, 100-tonne crane helped install the world-leading multi-layered lining system, which provides Kate Valley with a containment system superior to the standards used in both the European Union and the USA for municipal waste landfills.
