New beginnings for Hutt City Council’s waste and recycling service

Our Wellington team has kicked off the new Hutt City Council kerbside waste and recycling contract, which will see Waste Management managing the region’s waste until 2029.

It’s involved a huge amount of effort, dedication and expertise. The logistics alone have been a massive undertaking – with general waste wheelie bins, mixed recycling wheelie bins, (opt-in) garden waste wheelie bins and glass recycling crates being delivered to around 40,000 households in the region.

Regional Manager – Wellington Sarah Whiteman says she couldn’t be prouder of her team, who have worked long hours with a great attitude to ensure a successful start to the contract on 1 July.

“This has been a journey of epic proportions!”

On day one of the new contract, the team held an early morning breakfast celebration to recognise the colossal effort of the wider team. Manager Māori Partnerships Sonny Wilcox led proceedings with a karakia and mihi to bless the new contract.

EVs Bin Diesel, Truck Norris, Trucky McTruckface & Recyclosaurus Rex are now on the road making collections, with Bruce Springclean, Trash Gordon & Chitty Chitty Bin Bin soon to follow.

Sarah says the EV fleet is currently on par with Auckland’s, but once the new vehicles arrive (Bruce Springclean, Trash Gordon & Chitty Chitty Bin Bin), Wellington will have Waste Management’s largest EV fleet in the country – both commercially and municipally.

“We have achieved as a wider Waste Management team something to be extremely proud of… the bar has been set high and all eyes are on us, but I am confident that we have the right team to not only meet, but exceed those expectations.”
